A SHORT HISTORY OF CULTURE AT WHIRLPOOL

The year 1995 proved to be very difficult at Whirlpool: from all indicators, our business was under stress. If that were not enough, like a gothic creature that becomes visible only in bad times, the culture of Whirlpool came out of the shadows and began menacing our social interactions. We began seeing and experiencing actions by leaders in the organization that were antithetical to what Whirlpool holds dear. There was a silo mentality that developed into infighting between work units. In addition, there was a lack of dialogue and debate to get to the right answers.
