THE INFRASTRUCTURE ELEMENTS OF THE WHEEL

Vision and goals set the context for embedding innovation. The real work of embedment, however, comes from those elements that reflect the tangible and structural foundations that make innovation as a core competence not only come alive but be long lasting.

For our infrastructure, we selected elements that represented five main areas: resources, leaders, culture, systems, and processes. These elements circumscribed the many changes that Whirlpool would need to make in its infrastructures. Here is a brief review of each infrastructure element of the wheel in the sequence shown in Exhibit 2.1.
