Fundraisers as Leaders

Should fundraisers be leaders? Is that part of the obligation? It’s easy to say that everyone should be a leader. (Oh, that problematic word should.) I suspect that most people lead in some aspect of their lives at some point—and often regularly. But right now, let’s focus on the kind of collaborative and empowering leadership presented in this book, and within the context of nonprofit institutions and the philanthropic sector. Yes, I think that—by virtue of position and role—fundraisers need to be leaders. And leaders must be organizational development specialists.

Moreover, I want fundraisers to be leadership leaders. Read Chapter 5, “The Art of Leadership,” as a companion piece to this chapter about fundraising professionals. Read other books and articles about leadership. There’s so much out there. Now decide how you define leadership and what kind of leader you plan to be.
