The Experience Economy

As we navigate this period of change, we should remain cognizant of the long sweep of economic history, as Joseph Pine and James Gilmore have written about in their book The Experience Economy.

As the co-authors point out, if we stand far enough back, we can trace wave after wave of shifts in the economy and track how they have impacted society and business. We can see the shift from the Agricultural Era to the Industrial Era and how it put unique adaptive strains on the human capital market of the times. During this shift, we saw men go from being largely self-employed farmers and labourers to becoming indentured workers toiling for someone else in very strict and rigid factory settings.
