Middle Management Malaise
One easy litmus test with which to gauge high-performance leadership effectiveness is to ask a typical group of mid-level managers or front-line supervisors to summarize their organization's strategy. You will inevitably find a frustratingly wide range of misunderstandings, misinterpretations and blank stares, despite what the senior leadership team will tell you have been their Herculean efforts to communicate the strategy. Senior leaders often simply fail to appreciate the fact that this breakdown occurs not because of problems with the quality or quantity of the communication, but rather due to a failure on their part to provide meaning or relevance to those middle managers.
