Challenge #2: Clarity and Credibility

The second challenge of the modern transformational leader is ensuring that the organizational purpose, objective and intent are clear and then underpinning that clarity with an unblemished level of personal credibility, which serves to bolster followership. Clarity and credibility together are the non-negotiable baseline essentials necessary for a leader to secure “permission” to lead from those who follow.

Dr. Steven F. Hayward put it very well in his book Churchill on Leadership when he described the essential aspects of Churchill's character as a leader. He listed four attributes:

  • candour, courage and plain speaking
  • decisiveness
  • historical imagination
  • balancing detail with the big picture
