Management of Storage Networks
In the course of this book we have dealt with the different techniques that are used in storage networks and the benefits that can be derived from them. As we did so it became clear that storage networks are complex architectures, the management of which imposes stringent demands on administrators. In this chapter we therefore want to look at the management of storage networks.
We start by considering the requirements for management systems in storage networks from different angles, arriving at five basic services that an integrated management system must provide an administrator over a central management console (Section 10.1). The components of storage networks offer a variety of different interfaces so that these can be integrated into management systems and monitored and controlled there (Section 10.2). We then take a detailed look at standardised interfaces for in-band management (Section 10.3) and out-band management (Section 10.4). We close the chapter with a discussion about the operational aspects of storage network management (Section 10.5).
