It is virtually impossible to understand how storage networks work without understanding filing functions. As the top functional layer in any storage process, filing is responsible for determining where data objects are located within the available storage address spaces.

This chapter introduced the fundamental concepts of file system operations. It began with a discussion contrasting file systems and operating systems and then moved into a discussion of the two primary structures in file systems: the directory system and the layout reference system.
