Chapter 19

Adjusting Your Line and Area Charts

IN THIS CHAPTER

check Building weekly line charts

check Developing monthly line charts

check Creating monthly area charts

Line and area charts (introduced in Chapters 6 and 7) remove all the detail around trading ranges and just show the closing price for each week. The line just connects the closing prices. Investors use these charts to find breakouts above/below previous areas of resistance/support without all the other details found in candlestick or bar charts (covered in Chapters 4 and 5). Trend lines are very clean, using closing prices.

In this chapter, we show you how to customize line and area charts for your needs:

  • Line charts work great for longer-term trading. The two examples in this chapter use weekly and monthly charts. For 401(k) buy and hold investors, this is going to get you in near the beginning and out near the end.
  • Area charts are the types of charts you see most frequently on TV financial shows because they provide the easiest visual for seeing price movement. They essentially show the same information as line charts but in a more dramatic way.
