Few things symbolize our beliefs, philosophy, and fears more vividly than the systems and procedures we establish to control money. Financial procedures determine the way we talk about our plans, our performance, our history. Economics has become such a central theme in our lives that we even give money the power to determine our self-esteem. If we want to know where we stand at work, our budget and our spending authority are the most trustworthy, unambiguous indication of how the organization feels about us. Value and trust are measured by the amount of money we are paid and the amount of money we are free to spend.
