In the Service of Top Management

Staff groups affirm patriarchy by whom they define as their primary client. When you ask most vice presidents of legal, finance, and HR what their number-one concern is, they answer that it is the relationship with the top of the house. They use the language of “partnership,” but they usually focus on partnership with the top. They want a seat at the table when the future of the enterprise is discussed, and much of their time is spent keeping that seat secure. Most every professional HR conference I have been to has had a major segment on how to have more influence with top management. HR leaders seek with great intensity an advisory and intimate relationship with the top executive.
