Balancing Power
Partnership means to be connected to another in a way that the power between us is roughly balanced. Stewardship brings accountability into each act of governance and requires a balance of power between parties to be credible. When we talk of supplier-customer partnerships, of marketing-manufacturing-research partnerships, what we are seeking is to recognize the interdependence of the parties and replace control with cooperation. Partnership is the opposite of parenting, and when we are dealing with adults, people over eighteen years of age, stewardship and parenting do not mix.
