ANALYSIS OF VARIANCES

INTRODUCTION

Analysis of variances (ANOVA) tests are used to compare three or more samples in terms of some numerical dependent variable. ANOVA tests will determine whether or not there are any significant differences between the samples. An immediate question that comes to mind is why can a series of t-tests not be used to compare the samples? After all, if there are differences between the samples, then we will wish to compare each pair of samples anyway. Indeed, in this age of computing power, a series of t-tests can be conducted relatively quickly even if there are multiple samples being compared.
