9.7. Estimation of Predicted Values

In Section 9.2, you made predictions of Y for a given X. You predicted that for a move with 500 cubic feet, the mean labor hours is 22.67 hours. This estimate, however, is a point estimate of the population mean. In Section 6.3, you studied the concept of the confidence interval as an estimate of the population mean. In regression, you can form a confidence interval estimate for the mean response of Y for a given X. Figure 9.5 on page 217 provides a confidence interval estimate for the mean response of Y for a given X. For the moving company example, you have 95% confidence that the mean moving time for 500 cubic feet is between 20.799 and 24.5419 hours.
