Computing Poisson Probabilities

You can use JMP to compute Poisson probabilities. Referring to the example in Section 5.5 in which the mean = 3, you find the Poisson probabilities of two or fewer successes as follows:

  1. Open a new JMP data table.

  2. Select ColsNew Column.

  3. Select the Column Properties button. Select Formula from the pop-up menu.

  4. In the dialog box that appears (see Figure A5.6), select ProbabilityPoisson Distribution.

  5. In the edit box that begins with Poisson Distribution, enter 3 for lambda, the mean number of successes, and 2 for k [defined in Equation (5.6) as x], the number of successes. Click the OK button. In the New Column dialog box, click the OK button.
