Introduction

Graphics refers to the visual representation of data. Graphics have been used by civilizations throughout recorded history. The following 1801 quote by Playfair [see Reference 1] summarizes the importance of graphics:

I have succeeded in proposing and putting into practice a new and useful mode of stating accounts...as much information may be obtained in five minutes as would require whole days to imprint on the memory, in a lasting manner, by a table of figures.
