Symbols

Each of the four basic arithmetic operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—is indicated by an appropriate symbol:

[+] add

[×] or [·] multiply

[–] subtract

[÷] or [/] divide

In addition to these operations, the following symbols are used to indicate equality or inequality:

= equals

≠ not equal

approximately equal to

> greater than

< less than

≥ greater than or equal to

≤ less than or equal to
