Chapter 5. ICs, Oscillators, and Filters
This chapter is the first in the book to use integrated circuits (ICs) in a breadboard circuit. The IC, a 555 timer, is one of the most common ICs used in the world. The IC is first used to build an astable multi-vibrator. A light emitting diode (LED) is used to show the astable multi-bibrator working, flashing the LED on and off as the circuit oscillates. The number of times the circuit turns the LED on and off is calculated as a frequency (measured in Hertz: Hz). A capacitor/resistor a.c. voltage divider is shown to act as a filter, with a time constant and corner frequency. Practical aspects such as using single-strand wire as small connectors in the breadboard circuit are covered.
