It’s clear that Emma and Alan will need a shop from the start. They begin their search by walking around their local area after work one day and making notes of any empty shops.

They find one that was previously a café, in a spot that they think would be ideal. Alan is worried that if the previous owners couldn’t make a café work here, then maybe they can’t either – but Emma thinks that a sit-down café is the wrong offering in this area which is where office workers want to pick up quick lunches to take away. But they decide they’d better do some more research.

It’s just three doors down from a big Pret A Manger branch, so people do definitely come here to get their lunches – and the shop front is quite visible as you walk along the street. ...
