Simon Murdoch was running a UK software company that provided software to major book retailers. He had an entrepreneurial idea to pitch to his customers, but his plans didn’t work out:

The internet came along and we talked to a lot of our customers about whether they should be on the web selling books – we were very keen to get some of our customers to commission us to develop internet book-selling operations. Unfortunately for various reasons, the big guys at Waterstones and Dillons either didn’t want to do it or chose to develop their internet services with other people so eventually I just decided that if none of the big guys are going to choose us we will do it ourselves and compete with them.’
