Look your customer in the eyes

However much research you do, nothing can beat getting out to actually speak to your potential customers.

If you’ll be a B2B, do whatever you can do to get any kind of meeting. Have a formal meeting, get ten minutes with them at a trade fair or networking event, go for lunch, take them for a pint after work, anything.

Once you have them in front of you, you need to remember that the main point is to listen to them, not to talk to them. Because you’re excited about your business it’s all too easy to switch into ‘transmit’ and spend half an hour telling someone about your great idea, rather than switching into ‘receive’ and gathering the information you need.
