Who do you know?

It’s often said that ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know’. This is actually true – but not in the way these people mean. They mean that knowing a politician, a powerful business person or someone really rich or famous is what matters. It’s not. What can really help you is knowing someone who has specialist knowledge in your chosen industry, someone who understands business in general or, even better, someone who has done what you want to do – start a business. And anyone you know can be helpful in some way, whether that’s for providing advice, being a test customer, or putting the word out to people they know.
