Before I say another word about money I want to say this: you don’t need to be rich in order to start your own successful business.

It’s certainly easier to start a business if you are rich, but having lots of money doesn’t give you any advantage in terms of starting a successful business. You can spend a fortune on advertising, flashy offices or consultants – but if you don’t get the basics right your business will still fail, however much you spend.

People start businesses all the time with very little or no money of their own. I started mine when I was still in debt with my student loan, and the monthly salary from the job I left had only been enough to cover my living costs. I had no savings or investments to cash in.
