Understanding Absolute References
You will find that since functions typically reference several different cells or cell ranges to actually return a value, you will need to know how to make a cell reference in a function absolute. In Chapter 5 we discussed how Calc uses relative referencing by default, making it easy for you to copy formulas or functions that will be applied to a number of different locations on a spreadsheet.
To reference a cell address as absolute, you place a dollar sign ($) before the cell's column designation and another dollar sign ($) before the cell's row designation. So, to use cell B5 in a function as an absolute reference, it would appear as $B$5.
