The terms compiled in this glossary are the special vocabulary of the stage manager.

Abstract Set Nonrepresentational set that suggests rather than simulates appropriate surroundings.

Accent Emphasis placed on an action or phase of a play by lighting or staging technique.

Achromatic Lens A lens that transmits light without separating it into its spectral colors. Lenses should be achromatic.

Acoustics The qualities of sound transmission within a theater.

Act Curtain See Curtain.

Acting Area That part of the stage used by actors during the performance; may be extended to aisles or elsewhere if the action of the play takes place there.
