Data Profiling
Every person whose work involves data ingestion and consolidation wants to know exactly what constitutes the source data that they are using. While this does not mean knowing every morsel of data in every table, it can and should mean having a high-level view of what is (and equally important—what is not) in a column of data. This knowledge can often be a valuable first step in deciding on the validity of a data source, and even in choosing whether or not to proceed with an ETL process.
