13.1. Understand Policy-Based Management

Policy-Based Management involves some new terms that should be defined before continuing:

target—SQL Server Management Objects (SMO) that are managed by Policy-Based Management. A target could be, for example, an index, a database, or a table.

facet—A set of properties for certain types of targets that can be managed by the established policy.

condition—A property expression that evaluates to True or False. These are mainly used to control properties of the facet in question.

policy—A Policy-Based Management condition and the expected behavior. A policy can contain only one condition and may be scheduled or on demand. Policies can be enabled or disabled. They can also be evaluated by a process we will discuss ...
