5.2. Implement Domain Integrity

Domain integrity enforces the integrity of the individual data point. Each piece of data about an entity must conform to rules that state acceptable criteria regarding the formats and values of that data. By enforcing such attributes as data types, valid values, and boundary values, a database administrator can ensure that the user does not enter values that are not appropriate for a data point.

Enforcing domain integrity means controlling the values that a user can place into a data point in a database. The collection of database points that share the same rules in a database is called a domain. Column definitions in a table provide the behavioral rules for the domain represented by the column.
