14.1. Configure the SQL Server Agent Service

The SQL Server 2008 product consists of multiple Windows services. The most prominent is the SQL Server Service (MSSQLServer), which is essentially the Data Engine. The SQL Server Service provides all interaction with data and query processing. There are other services included with SQL Server 2008, however.

Another important service is the SQL Server Agent. This is the automation service. The role of the SQL Server Agent is to handle scheduling of activities and communicate information about those activities to relevant parties.
