You might ask, “Who is a mere mortal? Me?” The answer is not simple. When we started to write this book, we thought we were experts in the database language called SQL. Along the way, we discovered we were mere mortals too, in several areas. We understood a few specific implementations of SQL very well, but we unraveled many of the complex intricacies of the language as we studied how it is used in many commercial products.
