When you take a photo, the camera records the amount of light reaching the sensor in the camera body. You control the amount of light by adjusting the shutter speed, the aperture, and the ISO. But how do you know how much light there is and what settings to use?

The camera has a built-in light meter that reads the amount of light coming through the lens and lets you know if the current settings are going to let in too much or too little light. This works remarkably well most of the time. The camera looks at all the light coming through the lens and averages it to approximately 18% grey.
