Finding the Light

The first question to ask when setting up a portrait concerns where the light is coming from. Is it coming from the sun on the horizon or through an open window or door? Is the light naturally occurring in the scene or will you be adding light by using a flash?

The direction of the light striking your subject defines how the subject will look. The direction of the light is what causes the shadows in your images to fall where they do. The shadows give the subject depth. Light can be coming from above, below, the front, the back, and the sides.
