There are three other accessories that you may need when photographing portraits: a light stand, an umbrella flash mount bracket, and a set of radio triggers. You can get by without these and just use natural light, but when you decide to take it to the next level, you can use the following:

• Light Stands. A light stand is a metal stand that holds a flash or reflector in place. They come in a huge variety of sizes, materials, and prices. I have a set of two light stands that expand to about six feet, are very lightweight, and fold into a small footprint. These would be terrible for use in a studio or to hold up a big softbox, but they are perfect for small flashes with small umbrellas or softboxes.
