As a data scientist or sport performance analyst you may have heard the phrase “get to know your data.” This is rightfully so, because knowing the data is fundamental to understanding the factors that can play a role in the athlete’s or team’s performance, whether physical or psychological. This poses questions such as the following: “How much do we know about psychological variables in sport? How do we, as sports data scientists, examine psychological data? And how much variance in sport performance is due to individual and environmental moderators of psychological factors?”
