The concept of foods first, supplements second implies that individuals, including athletes, can meet most if not all of their nutrient needs through foods and typically do not require additional supplementation. Of course, there are circumstances where vitamin or mineral supplementation may be warranted such as in the case of diagnosed nutrient deficiencies or certain medical conditions.
