Before the custom visualization framework was available in Splunk, you would have needed to acquire the custom code or create your visualization code and modify your dashboard using JavaScript. Now that visualizations can be properly packaged, you can simply select them from the same visualization picker that the built-in visualizations use.
To use a custom visualization, you first download the app that contains the visualization and then install the app in your Splunk instance. From there, you create your dashboards as you normally would and can select the right visualization for your data.
