Special Subjects: Beginning Chinese Brush

PROJECT NINEUSING LARGE STROKES

Landscapes are a favorite subject for Chinese brush artists. Use this project to practice your stance and movements. Remember to move your whole arm—not just your wrist—when painting.

With a medium brush (or large brush if working on a large sheet of paper), draw wavy, irregular strokes with a watery color, such as brown with a bit of gray.

Continue to add brushstrokes. To build contrast, use less watery ink for some strokes.

Use a dry brush for black ink and a second brush for colored ink.
