By using a variety of brushstrokes—short and choppy, round and smooth—you can create a variety of textures and effects, each lending to the spirit of the subject. In this painting, a tea hut stands in the background as watery stepping stones extend into the foreground.

Use a medium brush with brown or gray to draw the top of the hut. Rather than thick strokes, use parallel, thin strokes.

Continue to build the tea hut, adding a window with rough strokes.
