What Is Exchange Server?

In 1996, Microsoft introduced Exchange Server, a product that could be used for corporate messaging and collaboration. Since that time, Exchange has gone through several revisions. The three versions commonly installed today are Exchange Server 2000, Exchange Server 2003, and the newly released Exchange Server 2007. Exchange Server 2000 and Exchange Server 2003 require Windows 2000 and Active Directory or Windows Server 2003. Exchange Server 2007 requires Windows 2003 running on 64-bit hardware.
