XHTML is just one of a number of specific applications of the Extensible Markup Language that is shaping the way the World Wide Web will look in the future. XHTML updates HTML, adds new features in a more flexible way through modularization, and helps erase some of the sloppy habits created in the past with browsers that did not enforce well-formedness rules properly.
