XHTML 1.0

The 1.0 version of XHTML was written as a direct translation of HTML 4.01 (released simultaneously on January 26, 2000) into XML. The W3C recommendation defining “XHTML 1.0: The Extensible Hypertext Markup Language” can be found at

At time of writing, an updated version of XHTML 1.0 (XHTML 1.0 Second Edition) was a W3C working draft. XHTML 1.0 Second Edition does not extend or change XHTML 1.0 semantics or functionality. It merely incorporates errata and clarifications for the original recommendation. Check the preceding URL for the latest official version of XHTML 1.0.
