Although XSLT is a very important part of XSL, it does not deal directly with the physical layout and formatting of XML documents. XML-FO exists to provide the mechanisms for applying presentation and style controls over structured XML documents. The functionality of XSL-FO is similar to that of Cascading Style Sheets; however, XSL-FO does go beyond the functionality provided by CSS, offering features such as page numbering, improved margins, footnotes, and a host of other features which have been added to XSL-FO to deal with laying out complex documents.
