Although IPv4 has been the most successful data transmission protocol, certain limitations in its implementation have necessitated the development of a newer IP version called IPv6. One of the main limitations of IPv4 is the insufficient address space. The exponential growth of the number of users connecting to the Internet and the number of networks cannot be accommodated in the IPv4 address space. Techniques such as NAT and subnetting that are used for conserving IP addresses are not permanent solutions to the address space problem. The number of bits in the IPv6 address space has been increased to 128 bits.
