Summary

To provide mobility for IP addresses implemented on mobile devices, a new data transmission framework called mobile IP was developed. The framework implements a home agent and a foreign agent to redirect datagrams destined for mobile devices. Changes to the IP addressing scheme was avoided by providing a temporary IP address called the care-of IP address to the mobile device. However, care-of addresses were not revealed to higher-level protocols such as TCP. These devices can communicate directly with the home agent or need to use a foreign agent to manage communication with the home agent.
