Summary

IP telephony is a technology that enables the existing intranets and internetworks to be used as a substitute for a traditional telephone system such as the Public Switched Telephone System (PSTN). One of the subsets of IP telephony that is used for transferring voice over an IP-based network is called Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Sending and receiving voice communications over an IP-based network is less expensive in many ways compared to the costs incurred on the same in PSTN. Audio files can be transmitted over an IP-based network just like any other data file.
