Internet Group Management Protocol

In addition to the routing information propagated by hosts, information on the multicast groups on the same network or different network also needs to be transmitted to other hosts. To enable this feature, IP’s functionality was extended to create a new protocol called IGMP. The specifications for communicating group membership among routers and hosts are provided by IGMP. The status of the group membership needs to be updated frequently to avoid unwanted entries from filling the list. This also prevents messages from being sent to computers that do not belong to a group.
