So far, you have seen different ways in which routers communicate routing information across the other routers in a group. However, in the case of the Internet, a number of groups are connected through different routers. If all the routers start exchanging routing information, the magnitude of routing traffic itself would almost clog the entire bandwidth. Therefore, internetworks were reorganized into autonomous systems and routing protocols that enable routing within an autonomous system and between different autonomous systems.
