Advantages of Using DNS

Before the evolution of DNS, the mapping between the host names and the IP addresses was maintained by the Network Information Center (NIC) in a file called hosts.txt. A copy of the hosts.txt file had to be maintained on all the computers on the network. As computers were added to the network, the hosts.txt file had to be updated and the new copy had to be replicated on the other computers. This mechanism became cumbersome with the increase in the number of computers that were to be connected to the Internet.
