MIME

SMTP is used for transferring messages that use the ASCII format. To transfer mail that does not use this format, an extension of SMTP called Multimedia Mail Extensions (MIME) is used. MIME is used to convert data in a non-ASCII format to the format that is used by SMTP. The files that do not store data in the standard ASCII format are image files, such as JPEG, and video files. MIME can also be used to send application-specific data.
