IMAP

Consider a situation in which a user needs to access mail from many computers. If the user is working in the offline mode, the messages would have to be downloaded to these different locations. If the user needs to access messages that were downloaded earlier, it might not be possible because the mail would have been saved on different computers. To overcome these problems with POP, a more efficient protocol called the IMAP is used. IMAP provides two modes of accessing mail, online and disconnected. In the online mode, after establishing a connection with the mail server, the user can access and work with the messages directly on the server.
